BLOG #2 U.S. Supreme Court
Before reading the History Channel's overview on the U.S. Supreme Court, I had limited knowledge in regards to this specific topic. Therefore, there was quite a great amount of new information I learned throughout the article. Prior to reading the article, it was known that the U.S. Supreme Court is the highest level of the federal court and the leader of the judicial branch of government in the United States. The Supreme Court has the very important job of making any and all legal decisions throughout the country. Created by the U.S Constitution, the Supreme Court was developed to oversee both the executive branch and the legislative branch. In my opinion, the most valuable takeaway point I learned about the Supreme Court was based on the highest judicial officer in the nation. With a great amount of responsibility, the chief justice is in charge of gathering the Supreme Court weekly meetings and has the authority to assign who writes the court's opinion. They are also responsible to attend trials of impeachment of the President of the United States. The information that was most shocking about the U.S. Supreme Court System was that it took six times before deciding the number of seats that best fit the Supreme Court System. Since 1869, Congress established that there will be 9 seats that make up the U.S. Supreme Court. The article definitely gave me a better understanding of the different areas within the Supreme Court and how they operate.
