PRIVACY

In the first Ted Talk, Juan Enriquez discussed our different topics that all play a part regarding privacy on the internet. The key takeaway that was conveyed throughout his speech introduced the concept of Electronic Tattoos. Electronic Tattoos have collected information based on individuals' everyday use of their devices. These types of networks that are using this data are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Linkedin, GPS, Yelp, Travel Advisory, Credit Cards, etc. Electronic Tattoos can greatly affect our society as a whole by causing citizens to feel unsafe and unprotected by the government and large companies.

The technology available in this day of age is more advanced than ever before. Surveillance equipment designed for military use has become a part of police departments both big and small. This type of equipment called license plate readers and cell tower dumps can provide authorities with large amounts of information in detail. Without citizens' knowledge, the government can track where people go and the time period of travel. The government uses our personal statistics that are collected to make assumptions about the way we are as humans and save our private information.

After watching Christopher Soghoian’s Ted Talk, it is evident to me that nothing is kept secret and that someone is always listening. This is due to people having the ability to hack into the surveillance system of surveillance companies to gather private information. However, with new technology incorporated into cellular applications and devices, the government is having a hard time adapting to the restrictions put into play for better protection of privacy. Although these protections make it harder for the police to detect criminals and stalkers, I believe it is extremely important that we can have private conversations without invasion from the government. We should not need to live in fear in our own homes that people are listening to private conversations we share with friends and family.

Darieth Chisolm suffered a traumatic experience that involved an invasion of personal privacy. After a bad breakup, her manipulative partner created a website sharing inappropriate photos taken of her without any knowledge. This is a complete invasion of her privacy and it should not have taken as much time and effort for her to be able to shut the website down. Overall, there is a desperate need for better to protect this from happening.
